What an episode. I had trouble finding a quote, but that’s not due to lack of things that happened. This episode marked a turning point for the first season – and it owes it all to its final minutes.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. That was an awesome episode. So much stuff on so many levels. I am shocked. Finally, some closure on the Nucky/Margaret relationship. The moment Nucky saw her at the party, it was clear. That man is madly in love. He might just not know it yet.
“No it makes me sick that they’re getting a thousand bucks to lay there and do nothing while I bust my ass for ten bucks an hour plus tips.” (Sookie)
True Blood… is something else. As I was watching the first episode, I kept asking myself (and everyone around me) who comes up with people like this. They’re all completely crazy, there’s not a single reasonable one in the bunch and the most normal one can read god-damn minds. What the hell?
“I suppose it’s a schvartze term.” (Eddie)
A lot of transport in this episode – which is unspurprisingly called “Broadway limited”, referring to the train between New York and Chicago. Incidently, it ended with Jimmy on said train – so the questions to where he is going are answered in advance.

Second episodes are always a hard thing to pull off. In this case even more so: you have a pilot directed by Scorcese and the assignment that you have to emulate his style. Good luck. It was immediately clear the cinematography was a lot more modern this time around – the Chicago opening shot a fine example of this. But is that a bad thing? Hell no. No one can imitate Scorcese anyway. (more…)

The moment Boardwalk Empire started with that twenties-style fade-in, I knew I’d be in for something completely different. Of course, I kind of saw it coming, what with Martin Scorsese directing, but still. The characters! The sights! The music! The story! It was just as I’d hoped it would be. In fact, no. It was better. Boy, that took a long time, I said while I was watching the second to last episode of the season. But all those characters, all these plotlines, all those details – they’ve finally come together. The series finally has a sense, a direction. My co-viewers looked at me and rolled their eyes. A correction was in order. “Fine: I took a long time.” (more…)

I must’ve watched “Me and You and Everyone we Know” at least a dozen times. It’s one of those gift-that-keeps-on-giving kind of movies: there’s something new around every corner. Whether it’s tiny bits of text that get a new meaning with every viewing or the characters’ little quirks – it always gets me. I laugh until I can’t laugh no more. And that’s strange: in its core, the characters inhabiting Me and You and Everyone we Know are pretty tragic.
With Miranda July’s latest feature, “The Future”, it’s the same – but a lot more polarizing. It’s as if she sharpened the pencil: the funny is a lot funnier, and the tragic… I’m not sure what that means yet. (more…)
